Why Share

The Bible has a lot to say about sharing. It could even be said that sharing is foundational to our faith! Through Christ, God shared with us the glorious message of peace with God through faith in the Son’s atoning work on the cross. Jesus came at the bidding of the Father, sharing in our humanity that He might reveal God to a lost world.

Throughout Scripture, God teaches us about sharing.

  • In worship (Luke 22.17)

  • In the sufferings of Christ (1 Peter 4.13)

  • In the holiness of Christ (Hebrews 12.10)

  • In the rewards of Christ (2 Timothy 2.6; Colossians 1.12)

  • In each other’s afflictions (Philippians 4.14)

  • In each other’s joy (Philippians 2.17-18)

  • In meeting each other’s needs (Luke 3.11; 1 Timothy 6.18)

  • In sharing the good news of the gospel (Romans 10.14-17)

Why share? Because God has made us to be Christ’s ambassadors! By sharing, God makes His appeal through us. We also provide a visible expression of the love of Christ by operating in His Body, the Church, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Relay For Life

Brothers and Sisters in Jesus Christ:

Some of you may remember a few years ago that my union brothers and sisters and I walked the picket line at General Electric Company here in Louisville.  Many people said it was futile and we would have no leverage against the company because we gave them a specific date, a specific time, and also committed that we would be back to work at the end of the 48 hour strike.  So it seemed there was no power exuded by our united front.  But my opinion has always been that a statement was made which was observed by more than just GE.  Politicians at the local, county, state, and federal levels were aware that we were staging a strike in an unusual way.  We gave up two days pay and walked a picket line in frigid February temperatures which were in the teens to show  GE and anyone else who would listen our concerns that medical insurance costs are getting out of control.

What has this got to do with cancer and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life?  Well, the American Cancer Society makes quite a statement with the Relay for Life fundraiser.  Relay for Life brings in large amounts of money which helps efforts to prevent cancer, helps save lives, and helps diminish suffering from the disease.  But to me it speaks so much louder because people give freely their hard earned cash and their not so free time to volunteer in various fundraising efforts.

Galations 6:6-10 says:  “Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.  Be not deceived;  God is not mocked:  for whatsoever a man soweth, that also shall he reap.  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption;  but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.  And let us not be weary in well doing;  for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.  As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith”.

I believe God hears the statement we are making when we help with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraiser.  Unity Baptist Church of Bullitt county donated a grand total of $1,049.00 to the Relay in 2007.   And this does not count the donations for luminaria candles.

The luminaria ceremony is very special and I would like to ask for everyone’s help in trying to approach the luminaria differently this year.  I would like to start a list of people for whom you would like a candle to be lit.  It is my sincere hope that in this way the ceremony will not be repetitive when the list of names is read after the candles are lit.  Also, this will help those people whose donation resources are already strained from all of the other charities Unity has been supporting.  However, if someone else has already put a name on the list which you still want to personally honor then by all means do so.

The date of the Bullitt County Relay for Life is Friday May 16 and Saturday May 17.  We will take up the free will Church offering on Sunday, May 11.   If you would like to do some personal fundraising I have envelopes you can collect the money in.  You can turn in the money you collect on Sunday May 11.  As was stated above, we were credited for $1049.00 in 2007.  I realize we are looking at high school graduations and possible debt in building the new sanctuary.   Second Corinthians 9: 6-8 says:  “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly;  and he which soweth bountifully shall reap bountifully.  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give;  not grudgingly, or of necessity:  for God loveth a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you;  that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”

Let us continue to be cheerful in our giving for the joy of our Heavenly Father.

The theme for the Relay this year is   “Disney”.   So it is wide open for fun at our campsite.

I thank you in the name of Jesus Christ,
